Spending time with your coworkers outside of the office is important. Team bonding allows you to get to know the people you work with, hopefully leading to better performance as individuals and as a unit. It’s one thing to like what you do, but it’s another to like who you do it with. And since most of us spend at least 5 days a week working our butts off at our jobs, it doesn’t hurt to have a team who can help get you through a case of the Mondays.
Companies are catching on to the importance of this, and at Cisco, we’re fortunate to have benefits such as “Fun Fund” and “Time2Give” to be used for team outings and paid volunteer hours. So instead of (okay, in addition to) the typical post-work happy hour, the CloudLock Customer Success Team took the opportunity to volunteer at a local Boston nonprofit, Cradles to Crayons. Cradles to Crayons is an organization that collects new or gently used essential items and provides them to children living in low-income and homeless situations.
We showed up to the Cradles to Crayons warehouse, a team of 15 that included CloudLock’s Customer Success gurus, Account Management heroes, Tech Support rockstars, and our fearless leaders, decked out in our CloudLock track jackets – because dressing in matching outfits is fun!
We were quickly put to “work” assembling packs of clothes, shoes, coloring books, winter gear, diapers, and more for the kids. Between cooing over the adorable, tiny, baby loafers and challenging ourselves to pick out a birthday gift that would make a three-year-old boy light up, we were humbled by how many local children are in need of a winter coat or simply a toothbrush and toothpaste. It got us chatting with team members we don’t normally work with on a regular basis, and the best part of all – the chatter wasn’t about work.
Too often, when we get a chance to unwind with our colleagues, we spend the entire time discussing work, and a team outing starts to feel more like a meeting and less like a bonding experience. Plus, it felt really good to volunteer to help these kids and their families in some small way. As much of the happiness research out there will tell you, doing good for others brings you happiness. And happy people are more productive!
So get out there and volunteer with your team members, your coworkers down the hall, or your lunch table crew. Get your leadership team involved and find out if your company will match donations or hours to the charity of your choice. And if this isn’t part of your company culture, come work at CloudLock – we’re hiring!
