Work (noun) – the result of exertion, labor, or activity; a deed or performance.
If you look at the actual definition of the word work, it paints a pretty tough picture. Words like “exertion” and “labor” sure don’t sound like something one would choose to do. Yet, we all have bills to pay and families to support and things to buy (read: toys).
Most people make the choice to work because of the end result – you get paid for it. It is not often that people get to both get paid and actually enjoy doing it.
The Secret Ingredient
When we meet people in life – at barbecues, parties, social events – whatever – it really makes an impression when you meet someone who truly loves what they do. Maybe because it is so rare.
I have had the pleasure of working at some great companies over my career and have seen some really great workplaces and some – not so much. If I think back on what made the places I truly loved working at special it was most definitely – each and every time – the people I worked with.
Yes – these companies had good products and services, but beyond the “company mission” the secret ingredient I have found in remarkable work places is the team you work with. If the people around you are engaged, smart, passionate and funny everything else seems better and more enjoyable.
CloudLock Named Best Place to Work
This is why I am so proud that CloudLock has been recently named by the Boston Business Journal as one of Massachusetts “Best Places to Work”. I have seen firsthand an environment that has all of the ingredients to make people not work just for pay – but because they actually love what they do and the people they do it with.
The award itself is not so much a validation of what we all already know at CloudLock – but rather a forum for the rest of the world to see a company that is truly special and give others who might not have known about us the chance to explore a career with us as we grow. And we are most definitely growing – having hired 40+ people and counting so far this year.
It has been really exciting to watch this growth. Yes – CloudLock’s business continues to grow at an incredible rate, but for me the real joy comes from seeing really smart and fun people actually enjoying what they do on a daily basis.
Just in the past few months alone, we have (as a team) gone snowmobiling, skiing, had new hire scavenger hunts, team lunches outside, piñata smashings, silly string battles, worked on trampolines, had video game battles and even had a company talent show.
Now this sure sounds like something someone would choose to do! Sure – we have the perks here (ping pong, free food, video games, etc.), but so do so many other companies. What really separates CloudLock is the fact that all of our “fun” is not forced. Nope – believe it or not we actually love doing these things together – as a team.
The future in cloud security is big – but I think the future of the team at CloudLock is even more exciting. Much like the 300 Spartans who were fighting against all odds against the much larger Persian Army, we are a team that is proud, passionate and definitely not just doing a “job”.
At a prior company I worked at they had a slogan – “your job doesn’t have to suck”. I like to think here at CloudLock not only does it not have to suck, it has to be a job you think is awesome.
As someone who has spent 20 years in Talent Acquisition, it fills me with enormous pride to help market this incredible culture to people who want to be a part of something special – not just cashing a paycheck. If this sounds cool to you, you might just want to check us out.
